Ruth Wheeler

Ruth has been a practising Sculptor since 1998 when she first set up Sculpt It in Godalming.

Her work has evolved throughout the years as she has had more time to dedicate to her own practice and commissions.

Wood, stone, ceramics, willow and mosaics are the materials used in many projects.

Ruth has worked with many mediums through out the years both in her own work and Community arts, such as murals, ceramics, willow , mosaics, resin, stone and wood. Wood is Ruth’s preferred medium and she has developed her skills and practice over the years on large scale works such as Tree sculpting with chainsaws and arbotec , to smaller hand carved benches and relief slabs.

Many of Ruth’s Public Art Sculptures can be found around Surrey in more than 100 schools and parks as well as private Commissions, to name a few : Farnham Park landmarks, Sheerwater Green Space. The Lido Tree, Guildford. Lion Green Community Bench, Haslemere. Snail and Bench Community Sculpture Project, Godalming River walk. The A3d Ring , Community schools installation, Punchbowl Hindhead.

New Public Art Commissions are undertaken every year . Update soon.

Her own work explores the beauty of wood itself, it celebrates the natural patterns of the grain but also combines detailed Carvings inspired from natural  patterns from around the world.

“I enjoy working with wood tremendous , the stages that  one goes through to get to the end product take you on a natural journey and I discover new ways of working every time! Peeling off the bark is always quite a big thing as I can see the true  form of wood underneath, unleashing the chainsaw onto the wood is always a scary moment when I almost hold my breath, Hand carving is very repetitive and relaxing, almost meditative. Time disappears on you when you loose yourself in the rhythm of chiselling. Sanding and  I have a love-hate relationship – I hate doing it and it is hard work but I love the results, the oiling is the finishing touch in most cases and the wood comes alive “

Ruth loves the  challenge to create something new and welcomes commissions for her sculptures, tree carvings and functional benches, however big or small.

Woody Bits is Ruth’s Wood Craft Collection designed and created at her home studio and her studio at  The Devils Punchbowl  until she moves this Spring to Birtley Estate.
