Colour Blaze at St Marks School, Godalming
Pupils at St Mark's Primary School in Godalming think the name for their huge mural, "Colour Blaze" is great. All the children at St Mark's were involved in either the development or the making of the mural and it was completed in June 2002. Now special projects are being linked to the mural every school term to keep it fresh for the children as the years go by.
Kids at St Mark'sFunded by Waverley the mural was designed by a committee of children from the school working with four local artists led by Ruth Wheeler of SCULPT it Studio and Gallery based in Godalming. Ruth and mixed media artist Jenella Ritchie worked with the children during school hours. Textiles and mixed media artist Faye Campbell and sculptor and painter Belinda Kelland came to the after school club to work with the children on the wooden cutouts, textiles, and resin sections.

Big, bright, and full of detail the mural features many different designs in wood, plaster, clay, textiles, resin, and paper sculpture. Linking the designs is a pathway of clay handprints weaving towards a backlit altar recess that will change with the seasons as the years go by. Artists Ruth and Jenella are pictured with some of the dozens of the clay hands made by the children.
